Arthur’s practice is in the areas of corporate and commercial law, and also in intellectual property. His core speciality is in mergers and acquisitions. He had been consulted on some of the most significant investments and transactions in Singapore real estate, electronics, motor parts manufacturing and in the oil and gas business and the construction of oil exploration vessels in the region. His extensive experience and practical approach is appreciated by clients who require effective representation in drafting agreements and at the negotiating table for large and complex transactions.
Some of the matters he had worked on in 2012 involved the following issues: alleged anti-competition behaviour by an MNC, oppression of minority shareholders by a MNC private equity group, labour issues encountered by a MNC upon their cessation of business in Indonesia, restructuring of several major Japanese companies into Operational Headquarters in Singapore to better pursue their objectives of increased investments in South-east Asia.
After graduating from law school he worked on labour and industrial relations issues in Malaysia-Singapore Airlines, the forerunner of SIA. His time spent in labour law had given him unusual insights into labour-related problems which affect investors in South-east Asia. He sees this as a growing aspect of his practice in the near future as more investments come to South-east Asia on account of its attractive investment climate and the changing political scene, e.g. the new Myanmar.
He continues to work closely with Phillip Bushby of Loke Bushby International, the Sydney based firm affiliated to his own, on regional oil related deals (joint ventures, merger and acquisitions, government lobbying). Philip assists the Singapore lawyers in giving senior lawyer input, and is frequently called in from Sydney to help.
Arthur’s firm is also part of a Singapore group law practice called Mozaic, which has lawyers who are skilled in litigation, IP, public law, construction, shipping and real estate. He works closely with some of these specialists in the Mozaic group whenever his clients’ matters have a need for a larger team to assist.
Arthur was a past Secretary General of the Inter-Pacific Bar Association and still serves as an Advisor to the Singapore Law Review. One of several directorships he has is as director of Noble Drilling’s companies involved in their South-east Asian operations. He is also a director of a telecommunications company (French) in a Vietnam joint venture. For the period May 1996 to December 1997, he was a columnist of the Asahi Shimbun (Sunday international edition) and from 2003 to 2005 he was Advisor to the Ministry of Industry and Trade of Mongolia.
In 2009 Arthur was selected for inclusion by Asia Law & Practice in its publication of Asialaw Leading Lawyers as one of the outstanding corporate lawyers in Singapore. In 2010 he was nominated by Global Law Experts as an expert in Singapore for corporate law.
