Introduction

The Firm was founded in 1981.  It has acquired an excellent reputation in corporate law, intellectual property law, real estate and construction law and is one of the most recognizable Singapore names in these areas.  The Firm had also advised on major litigation and arbitration, and represented first rank regulators and corporations in the Singapore courts and elsewhere.  We have been listed in Global Counsel 3000, a publication of Practical Law Company (in conjunction with Price Waterhouse Coopers) as a recommended firm in the categories of corporate and commercial law, intellectual property law and real estate and construction law.

Areas of Practice

Our lawyers advise on local corporate law, intellectual property law and tax law, mergers and acquisitions, capital market and finance, employment law, real estate law, banking and all commercial legal issues.  We are particularly skilful in counselling clients on inheritance and succession issues, and we represent clients in the Singapore courts and arbitration tribunals with tenacity and dedication. We represent investors in seeking out business opportunities in growth companies during this period.  See advertisement in the Business Times of 20 November 2008 attached, and we will respond if you wish to discuss some of the deals that have been referred to us.

Distinguishing Qualities

We are unallied to any large international law firm and maintain “best friend” relationships with major firms which do not have offices in Singapore.  We take pride in providing quality services to discerning and appreciative clients.  Without the big firm structure our rates are competitive.  Clients are attended to by only experienced lawyers who have exposure to international practices and whose contacts in their community are excellent.

We are a leading firm in some emerging areas of the law in Asia.  We have a growing practice in China litigation before the Chinese courts working with dedicated and seasoned Chinese litigators.  We also advise on India investments, particularly joint ventures which have complex structural or relationship issues.  We hired our first Chinese lawyer in 1993 and our first Indian lawyer in 1999, before the stunning growth in these countries.  Since then, the law and business development in China and India have been part of our firm’s general body of knowledge and expertise.

General counsel of client companies who engage us for work in morally challenging situations trust our experience, integrity and judgement to work within the ethical framework they themselves are bound.  This is an important factor to consider in using counsel in Asia.  See letter from Arthur Loke to Financial Times (4 November 2005).

We work with Phillip Bushby’s firm in Sydney, Australia, which is LOKE BUSHBY INTERNATIONAL (“LBI”).  Phillip Bushby is our Special Counsel on mergers and acquisitions in Singapore and the region.  Likewise, Arthur Loke is Special Counsel to LBI.  In India we work with BMS Rao of Bangalore, and in China, we work with Hao XiaoDong of Beijing and Tina Du of Shanghai, all experienced and excellent business lawyers the Firm is proud to work with.  All our partners, of counsel and partner firms have the ability to muster effective teams in their own jurisdictions at short notice to discharge even the most complicated and substantial transactions.  Each jurisdictional team offers to the other jurisdictional teams their full support in expertise, manpower or information database making our Firm one of the best sources of instant feedback of not only the law but also of the deals and the players in the region.
